Darwin was was not the First ; Not even Patrick Mathew .The evolutionary story precedes all this Media reports or news - sports dealing with Science .( every decade , several ties some 'scientific originality ' is replaced by some one else . That is natural of these days ).
Even I can offer a better source of real EVOLUTION from PURANA Whose Recorded Evidence is there in 3rd century A.D at least .
It is VISHNU PURANA i am referring to and it is not DARWIN'S Way of identifying from his aquatic voyage but like Einstein'd Patent -office - window-side -meditative Contemplation :
My presentation is about " Dash - Avatar " or Ten-step descent of Cosmic -intelligence ( of C,J Yung )in the Evolutionary Process of LIFE - Principle in aftermath period of COMIC EVOLUTION :
THEY ARE TABULATED AS FOLLOWS :
I , Life first EVOLVED   in WATER ( Aquatic Media ) and the collective
name was baptized as MEEN ( or Fish )
2 . the Fish learnt to crawl up to LAND ( when formed and the logo for
the Lord was Baptized as KURMA ( Tortoise ) or Amphibian group.
3. In NEXT Stage  EVOLUTION , the AMPHIBIANS  became  Quadrupeds
and the logo for their lord was named 'B A R H H A ' ( Pig .).
4. Next came the Matching BIPED  or 'ANIMANL- MAN and for them the
Evolved  logo was NRISHINGHA  or  Lion type  or( ? Neanderthal )- Man.

The  whole above period was named SATYA YUGA for they were all Spinal Creatures with no Expanding consciousness  or Power of Rational Thinking . And  were not responsible for their Action .
