UPANISHADS    AS    I    UNDERSTOOD :

"Ancient **Hindu - Cosmology  presents a detailed and  quantitative vision of cyclic  evolution/................./ converted to Earth-years

, some of  these levels have  Cyclic period that are  surprisingly similar to Time-scales of interests in Contemporary COSMOLOGY. And a day and night  in the life of  Brahma lasts a 'kalpa', a period of 8.64 Billion years."

** The word  'Hindu' - is really, a 'mos-nomer' or   a name imposed on BHARAT by PERSIAN  INVADERS.  The reason can be applied   to the distorted name 'INDIA'.

The religion of Vedik - BHARAT  was and even now is  "SANATAN  - Dharma" or eternal Evolutionary Religion out  which  Religion of  Buddha  and  that of Shankaracharya (Brahminism ) culminated.

 My humble submission :


I came to 'closer- knowing' of Upanishads  after my marraige (1960) when, my wife,  with a Master degree  and  with three volumes of  Upanishads , published by R.K.Mission --
(6Th .Edition,1976) by  Swami Gombhiraanonda. 
Though I was fully absorbed,then,  in my professional life (Medicine ) , I used to leaf through the pages , sometimes, guided by her and, over time,  was interested to know the meaning  of life and the depth of Spirituality in Bharatya 'Darshan'. 
After Retirement , I could  devote more time in  learning a bit more.- through reading the translated version  of Upanishads ( including   expositions  on Ge eta  by Swami Vivekananda, Sri Aurobindo, B.G .Tilak, and other great spiritual  personalities). 
Also , I attended with interest, some lectures of  Swami Ranganathananda , while in Delhi and  was inspired to study more about  Spiritual Science from available sources. 


 Finally while in U.S.A. ,-I  was presented a  book  -'The UPANISHADS'  of  Eknath Eswaran (Isbn. 10:0-915132-39-7 : 1987)by  my daughter Neela.
 The final out come was this Manuscript,  written between 2004 and 2006,  which can be summed up only as a  'Road Map'  from  a lay- man's poin of view  .
 Only variation is that -I have tried to present it in my own way with my poetic instinct(recognised) and  admitting  my own limitations and  my egoistic boldnes as a 'Free-thinker' .
I have tried , in places, some trans-literation of  both sanskrit and  english words to inject my own understanding of the words and logo-s.
The readers are free to construct their own  field of perception and opinion.

Six  Questions  by six disciples  about

? Universe .....Praano....the  source  of life--- abot sleep  and about Death  and Self: 
 ?  Who created the Universe.
:  The Lord meditated ;  brought forth praana with Raayi, -the giver of name and form. Praana is the SUN; Raayi --the Moon.
Those who observe outward form of worship and are  content with personal pleasure ,travel after Death by southern path, the path of the Ancestors , proceed throgh the Lunar world and are born again.
Sex-force  can transcend to Spiritual force.
? (Bhargava)  - what power support the body.
:All  powers boasted about their supremacy in the body but when Praana the vital energy declared to leave tthe body,  then  all  other powers had to leave  and then, admitted the supremacy of Praana.
?From what source does the praana comes.
: Praana is born of the self.
[Praana --apaana---samaana vyana --udaana]
?( Gargi)  who is sleepling when one sleeps.
:Senses are gathered up in the Mind , the master of all senses. Thus  when all senses are withdrawn, -we call it Sleep. And only the fire of Praana is burning.
 Udaana is the fruit of dreamless sleep. but the dreaming Mind recalls the past impressions. [ Dream; -like the  bird flying back to nest to rest]
The GOD, Supreme, cast no shadow.

10.   Atharba  Veda :   MUNDAKA UPANISHAT

ALL Knowkedge-s are two fold:  
   I) Higher  (spiritual ) 
  II) Lower  (Worldly  & Mammon)


Studies of Veda , linguistics,Rituals. astronomy , Art  --are all   lower knowledge ( Abidyaa)


Self - Realisation  is  the real higher knowledge (knowledge of the SELF )


As web is projected out of the spider and withdrawn. the Brahman  projects the Universe out of ITSELF as evolutionary Energy.
All knowledge , perceptions, actions are the root-outcome of the SELF.
Rituals and sacrifices deal with Lower knowledge.
 Actions prompted by pleasure or profit can not help any one to transcend material life.
Every thing in the Cosmos , great or small , live in the SELF.
Stop all vain talks  and  you will surely  advance.
It is his power that moves the body and mind.
" There the eyes can not see............"
" Ego &  Self are like two birds perched on the self-same tree........."
So long we are in the  house of ego, we feel attached  and involved in material life.
Desiring nothing of this physical world is the best way.
After Death the Vital force return to Cosmic womb and become a beneficial  cosmic energy.
All flowing rivers will  end in  the Ocean !

    Maandukyo  Upanishat 

AUM  &  4 stages of Consciousness

Mind  i) Out ward  ii)  In-ward  iii)  eliminated state

          a) Vaishwanor   b) Toijaso  c)Projna  d)Turyo or  Super- 

             conscious state.

AUM   stands for  non-dual or supreme reality.

Brahman is all and SELF is Brahman. Brahman has four stages of Consciousness:

I. Vaishwanor  - in this one lives with  all senses turned outward.

II. Taijasa - The dreaming state in which the senses turn 

     inwards with past deeds &  present desires [Dreaming  with

     desires even in waking state]

III.Projna  - Deep sleep ; neither dreams nor desires. Mind is 

     eliminated in this state; yet the sleeper is not Conscious. If 

     he was, it would open the door of abundant joy !

IV.Turyo --Super-conscious state ( beyond all senses and 

     intellect (attainable in Samadhi ).

 ABOUT  AUM :

A = the zone of Vaishwahara:  U= the zone of Taijasa ; 

M= the zone of Prajna.

* [By stilling the Mind one  can attain the true stature.

** Mind 'externalised' is the worldly-man.

Those who deny the  Self are born again.

 See all in the SELF and SELF in all.


Self  is everywhere , indivisible and UN-touched by sin.


  Thou know  all our deeds ; 
  Deliver us  from the evil.

and thus  Consciousness accompanies him and  Life departs along with the impression of all one has achieved.
We are said to be what our desire is,in life.
It is the stored up and unfulfilled desire at the time of  death that determines what  type our next life shall be.

WHAT THUNDER  TELLS !


 The Godlymen , better-human beings ,   Asuras ( degraded men )came to Prajapoti, the creator and  asked  for blessings and  HE  offered  them the same  symbolic  blessing  -" Da" each  time  and asked -what they understood ? They replied as follows;-
i.  Godly-men  were advised to practise Damyataa (Self-control).
ii.  Evolving -men were adviseded to practise (Daana) power of giving .
iii,Asuras were advised to  practise kindness ( Daya ).
* Asuras, Progressing -Man and godly men were but different levels of same human race in  ascending stage of evolution..
* Death is only an exit -door and not the Final finish of LIFE.

"No one can  buy Immortality with money"

"Everything is loved  not for its own sake but because of Self in it"

' The separate or individual self , on Realisation, dissolves in the sea of    Consciousness'.

As long as there is separateness, one is bound in Duality"

? What which is above Heaven and below the Earth; which is also between Heaven and Earth and which is same through past present and future, --in which it is oven.

:It is SPACE.

?In what  - is SPACE itself woven.

:It is Aksara[ It consumes nothing and nothing can consume it.]

 whoever dies without knowing the Imperishable, dies in pitiable condition. This Imperishable is the Self.

 State of Consciousness:

? what is the 'light' of Man.

:Sun is our light ; at night , Moon is our light;without moon, fire is our light ; without all above , -speech is our light. and when no one speaks  self is our light.

  The Self (pure awareness) shines as the light within our heart).

when a person dies, he lives in his non-physical body( third state of consciousness) and makes his own joy and pleasure.

The shining self never dreams and keeps body alive with vital force of 'Praana'.

In dreaming state  shining self assume many forms.

When one is freed from all desires -  the self enters the state of dream-less sleep.

In the Unitive -state one sees without seeing ( Super-Conscious state or supra-sensorial vision ).

Where ever there is sense of separate-ness ,--one sees in division.

When the body grows weak through old age, -the Self separate Itself.

(Cosmos  Vs  God)


 No effect  can ever be the first Cause but can be the cause of subsequent events..
? what can be the Cause of  COSMOS.
: No manifestation in NATURE can be  the cause of  f Cosmos  as they are but subsequent  events.
It is that which  rules over TIME , Space and Casualty. 
' On the ever revolving wheel of being, the individual Self  goes round and round through life after life, believing itself to be separate creature.
'Conscious  spirit and UN-conscious  matter  both have existed since the dawn of TIME.
'Avoid identifying yourself with the body.


'Bring both your Mind and breath under your control ( seated with spine erect).
Good health, light body,freedom from cravings, glowing skin,sonorous voice --are signs of progress.
HE ( GOD) was before Creation ; HE  will be after  Dissolution.
" HE projects the COSMOS from HIMSELF --maintains  and  withdraws it back into HIMSELF ( like  Spider & its net).'
" Bedaahom etat  purusho mohaantom........  oyonaayo"
" Sorbato paani  paadong tot ..... tishthoti"
'He resides in the City , known as our body, with nine gates'
HE knows everything and everyone but no one knows him nor anyone shall ever know.
THAT is subtler than the subtlest  and greater than the greatest.
"Two birds  closely perched on the same-self -tree.............................."


"In THAT  the whole universe is smaller than the smallest atom'
" HE is far beyond the reach of the Mind"
"Not female nor male nor neuter is the SELF"
"Evolution is a divine law"
" THAT is  pure Consciousness, omnipresent, omniscient and father of TIME, Master of three Guna-s. "
'Evolution takes place under HIS command'
'HE is  the Cause without cause'
We are but HIS innumerable instruments.

  i.  Physical sheath   ii. Vital sheath   iii . mental sheath 
 iv. Sheath of  wisdom  V. sheath of Bliss .

Before the Universe was created  Brahman  existed as Un-manifested.

" Seek it through Meditation :  ' Know thy  Self '[ 'Atmaanong biddhi ']
* (The hungry has as much right to  food as the rich.)
" All life is  but   One".

All seeing and knowing  is the self's seeing or knowing through Consciousness  alone.
 That Self is the  light reflected by all, -stellar , physical or human.
"The Self cum Cosmos is like a huge tree , -up-side-down;
  the manifested physical universe(-s) like the branches and  leaves  floating in Space.
And  whoever has understood this much,- has mastered Veda"
" The Cosmos came from Brahman"
" Overwhelmed by that  the fire gives heat; the Sun shines 
overwhelmed by THAT the  god of intellect (Indra) and space;
Over whelmed  by THAT  Death   rushes to its final fate"


" If Brahman  is not realised  in the present Life, one has  to be Re-born,"
 Brahman can only be seen in the Heart by reflection alone , as in a mirror.
" Above the senses is the mind, above the mind is intellect 
 above the intellect is  Ego and above that is consciousness
and even beyond that -- is Brahman"
" No  one  shall ever see GOD (Brahman) with naked eye( Visual)
" Yoga is the  state of complete stillness of all senses , mind , action, intellect'
" Two birds so close and perched together 
   on the self-same tree known as life
  while one of them tasting ever the bitter & sweet
 and the other one remains  ever detached."
Conquest is the final battle .
'When all desires that surges in the heart are overwhelmed, - Divinity flows in"  [* the path followed by Buddha]


from the heart radiates 101 vital tracks .

Sense derive from objects of senses; objects from mind and mind from intellect ;intellect from ego; ego from UN-differentiated Consciousness and finally  - consciousness from Brahman.
God-realisation is super-conscious level of knowing .
Meditation ; - voyage from  deep to deeper into consciousness . From Word  to thought and then beyond thought to wisdom of the Self.
" get up ; wake up; seek guidance and realities of  the self;
sharp like razor's edge is the path"


" Look to the World outside and miss the Self within".


" Seek not the  Change-less in the World of change"
"Those who see the multiplicity everywhere but not the One  indivisible Self - must wander from Death to Death"
"That thumb -sized being is en-shrined in the heart. ...that thumb sized  being , -like a flame without smoke"

   We live  not by breath that flows in and out but by that which causes the breathing"
" Of those  that are UN-aware of Self, some are born as embodied creature while others remain in a lower stage of Evolution"
'Brahman' contain all Cosmos  and 'all things'  beyond'. 
Self takes  the shape of every creature.
" Like ,-the Sun  that is the eye of every solar life
 and is not affected by individual's visual defects|
The same is the   Self in  every  living creature
and is not affected  by  individual sufferings or sorrow"

Does a person live after his 'death' or does he not  ?
The joy of 'atman ' ever abides  but not what seems pleasant to the senses.
Those who miss the goal of life , -prefer  the senses.


"Ignorant of their ignorance yet  'wise' in their own esteem, these deluded men, proud of their vain learning, go  round and round like blind men  led by a blind"
" Those who see themselves in all and  all in themselves, help others  through 'Spiritual osmosis ' ".
"The real 'Awakening'  does not come through logic or scholarship".
" Know that you are neither the body nor the mind but the eternal self"
"OM" is the symbol of God-head ( ?Supra-Cosmic -vibration : beyond  ,even, Planck's Unit)"
 Self was never born  nor will it, ever. die.
If the slayer believes that he can kill or the slain  believes that he can be slain, -then both are ignorant.
The self within , can exercise its influence far-far away ,though still,it can move everything  everywhere.
" The  self can not be known  either through scripture, or through intellect, or through hearing learned  discourses but can be attained by those whom the SELF Chooses."
" IT can never be known by one, who deserts not from UN-righteous path or can not still his mind or can not meditate upon."
" HIS  glory  sweeps away the rituals of the priests,powers of the  warrior and puts death itself to Death !"
 That  can not be seen .( you can not see your own face without reflection.)
Transcend from fear- full fragmentation to fearless 'Fullness'.
In change-less WHOLE is the way .

Chandyogya  Upanishat:( page 3 0f 3)


The deva-s  and asura-s  wanted to know the Truth about SOUL.
Indra  amongst Deva-s and Virochan from Assures (god-less) approached  Prajapati. They had to wait for 30 years  and then  ask:
: ' What is it that we see  reflected in water or in mirror ?
:you see your - Self. .....
     Now put put on your best clothes and things and look into and then  report ' -said Prajapoti.
 They obeyed , dressed up , looked into ,became over-joyed  that they reported their feeling '
: You have again  seen your  -self ' replied Projapoti.


Virochan  went home satisfied   and started dressing up himself with physical -mental pleasure.
But Indra  was not happy  with  what Gurus  short-cut  sermons that   self has anything to do with physical or mental state(When blind , the self remains blind; when lame the self is also lame !)
Indra  urged to know more.
  Prajapoti was very pleased  by Indra's State  of Mind ,retained him and taught him for another 96 years.


   Those who  know that they are not physical body,  transcend beyond  physical pleasure and pain.
   SELF is not  'Body' but  tied to it for life-time , like   an  Ox  tied to a Cart.

 Narada approached his Guru Sanat Kumar and boasted that he read all Vedas, epics, grammar, rituals  etc etc .
'They are all words and are names of finite phenomena. Everything in the Cosmos , -living, non-living , - comes from the SELF '   - -said his Guru. -' control the senses and purify the Mind'.

As great as the infinite Space beyond ,is the Space within  whether we know it or not .
those who depart from the World  , without knowing , who they are, -have no Freedom  , neither here  nor after death .
They will see, as their sticking desire incites them,- in other life too.
Objects of Desire  arise from the power of their own thoughts.
In this world our self-less desires are hidden by our selfish-thoughts.
All those and that we love , alive or departed ; all things that we 
desire but do not have , are found  when we enter that Space within.
    Negative thoughts or world can not  enter that inner Space of Brahman.
  " Blind is no more blind after death".
   There, the night also become day, as night cannot enter the space of Brahman. [ Night is only  shadow  of  of an Object called Earth]

      Bee  collecting honey from flower.........;
      Brahman & Cosmos  like salt in water .
      Shwetaketu was Uddalaka's son. He studied all Vedas  for 
      12 years and returned home , -proud and  egoistic.


     " But did  you ask your teacher for spiritual wisdom that enable one to hear the UN-heard or think the UN-thought  or know the UN-known ?"    -the father asked .
"What is that  father " -asked Shwetaketu.
"In the beginning was the being , -the one without second and  there is nothing , yet that has not come fromTHAT( throughManifestation).
In dream-less sleep one is with the SELF, though he knows not .
As the bee sucks  honey from from different flower,yet that honey is the same at every point, -so that no drop-let can say  -'i am from that flower'.--All  created ones can ever claim their different source as there is none that does not come from Brahman....... Of everything, THAT  is the  in-most SELF.(cf - my poem dt 19/05/09 ,-before I read this part of Upanishat)
* Death is  like the house  deserted- when the Dweller is gone.
 When death comes and self departs from the body, the body dies but Self does not.

2. Keno - Upanishat :

 Collective-self  is beyond  ' Duality' while individual Self is within  Duality.

All sensory organs , with mind, are only instruments  while SELF is the  ROOT.

" THAT- the  eyes can not see ,the words can not explain nor the mind can reach ;

Nor even with  knowledge, nor exploratory science,   one can know that finally"
If one thinks he knows the 'SELF' --he knows not.
 Taste of  orange- juice  can not be  explained but  can only be  experienced (  by tasting it).
 The only way of  knowing the 'SELF' is  through  self- Real -isation.
 To try to know  'SELF'  through intellect is  only ignorants'  dream.
As  'self ' is beyond  'Duality '. - how can one  know  IT without being 'IT'.
The Story :
     The gods  defeated demons ....and Brahman  knew  their 'foolish' pride and - appeared in person, in disguise ,.. .... placed a  straw before each one and asked them to move or burn , Both Agni  &; Vayu  failed.
Then came Indra (intelligence) and 'Brahman' vanished . .....
Soon Uma came and explained !
*( How can  one  see one's  own house  without being within it and also , then, without viewing  it from outside and above ?)

1. OITORIYO-Upanishat ;

    Ambho  -  is 'SPACE' high above the sky ( ? hyper-space )
   Maarichi - The sky 
   Maaraa    --The middle region  i.e EARTH
   Apo --------The realm of water below and around.


From water the Divine drew forth 'Purusha'....a mouth opened...the  Heart gushed out from the 'HEART'....Mind   descended  &  from Cosmic MIND  came out the Moon.
 the Naval opened with downward force and 'Apana' gave rise to  downward path of 'digestion ( ?Metabolism) &;'Death'


 Human form was the final form or acceptable choice(?Evolutionary) - finally .
To be re-born after 'Death' is the 3rd Birth ( ? Re-incarnation/ Re-cycling )
And 'Prajna is  the Pure Consciousness.

 'All that is , revealed ,or evolve or created in combination, - in this universe or  above or even beyond  ,  is   by the interaction  between the 'Field' & the 'knower' ( individual intelligence emanating from Cosmic Intelligence) - this much should  be  understood , finally , -oh  the son of 'Bhaaroto' ||


***In  Modern Science and Cosmology this phenomenon of  the Role of  the  participation  of the  Observer's  intelligence is , strangely, most often forgotten !
[* Like the  boat-man carrying people on the boat always exclude his own  weight ]
It was , I  think .,  Heisenberg who first  stressed the  involvement and effect  of the ' Observer ( participating - Intelligence)' in a scientific phenomenon !

By overwhelming  every thing and all that is , I have  created this 'Universe'  on  a  part of the whole  , that you name as  COSMOS ' ||


This scriptural exposition  has been proved to be at least, three thousand years old ( as recorded). 
And does it not  ,also, suggest the inclusion  of "DARK ENERGY" (73 %) or Vacuum-energy(Invisible ) ' of Modern Cosmology ?

As an ordinary or lay -man, I am submitting to the wiser class &and  community the  Indian Mythological / or Spiritual (Vedic)  interpretation of TIME by telling a story  from 'NARADA Bhakti-Sutra in following way(edited/compressed):-


Lord Vishnu , the executive head  for  creation of the Universe(Bishwa) , one day summoned his disciple Narada( his Ambassador for the World) and gave him half an hour (?cosmic) to fetch a jug of water from a certain part of the Earth.
 Narada came down to the World to  carry out  the order. But it so happened  that he fell in love with a girl of the World....married her, had children , lived happily and forgot his lord's message.
   Long and long earthly years passed and ,then, one day he  got a sharp call  ( maybe , -a 'mobile phone') from the  the lord as follows :
  ' Narada , -what has happened to you !  it is almost half an hour past and  no sign of your coming with the water I asked for ?'.......


 Narada  was 'struck-dumb' and mentally almost paralysed with surprise and shock ! he  tried his best to think backward !
-   ' how it could be  ! ..... I have been on this Earth now almost 30-40 years; -falling in love , getting married , having children and Lord Vishnu says that he has been waiting for  me for last half an hour !' ....................................................


      So  was it also 'Time-Contraction'(Maha-Kaal) or Cosmic -Time  or a different Time-scale that was even known to the Sages of 'Mythological days' of    'Maha-Bishwa' or  Cosmic Sphere ! ! !
